Communication Tips for Team Leaders
• Own your message. “I do not believe we have sufficient data to draw that conclusion.”
• Be specific. “Data from the Michigan site tells us that the dosage is too low.”
• Align your verbal and nonverbal messages. Make sure that your facial expression and gestures support your verbal message.
• Use multimedia. Use several communications methods (for example, voice and print) to get your point across.
• Tailor your message. Use language and examples that are familiar to your audience. If you are a scientist speaking to a non-scientist, use metaphors such as “imagine a river…”
