EMPOWERMENT: THE DOWNSIDE

With all the positive outcomes from empowered teams, can there be any downside? Can something go wrong? Is it possible that there can be too much of a good thing—too much empowerment?

In their 2000 article in the Journal of Personal Selling and Sales Management, Perry, Pearce and Sims point out three areas of concern:

Image   Overzealousness. An empowered team may overreach the boundaries of its authority and create problems for other parts of the business. For example, a sales team, in its desire to close a deal, may make promises that result in additional or unwanted work for another department.
