A pharmaceuticals company established a series of cross-functional, “cycle-time reduction teams” to look at ways to reduce the time it takes to get the product to the customer. We were engaged to help the teams work effectively together to accomplish their goals.

At first, each team was told both the number of days the cycle time for their product could be reduced and ways to reduce the time. At one of the first team launch meetings, the team leader asked, “If you are telling us what to do and how to do it, what do you need us for?” After some embarrassment, management agreed with the implication of the question and decided to open up the process.
