Tips for Giving Feedback to a Teammate

1.   Consider the timing. As a general rule, provide your feedback as close to the event as possible. If something happened during today’s meeting, try to talk with the person as soon as the meeting ends. However, you should also consider the person’s ability to hear and use the information at that moment. For example, if the person has just received some bad news about their job or family, hold off on your feedback meeting.

2.   Be descriptive, not evaluative. Provide information about the person’s behavior and its impact and avoid characterizing the person (e.g., “stubborn,” “closed-minded”). Try something like, “Jon, when you cut off Paul and Danielle and others before they were ...
