Research ability inadequacies in higher education

Abstract:

From pre-university, through undergraduate and graduate studies, even to the doctoral level, numerous studies have demonstrated significant gaps in student research ability. The notions that students become skilled at research simply by doing it (osmosis theory) or that their technological ability equates with research ability are not supported by studies investigating these issues. Students tend to overestimate their own abilities while demonstrating deficits when tested on those abilities.
