Introduction

A detailed consideration of characteristics of univariate distributions occupies significant time and attention in elementary statistics. We use techniques of exploratory data analysis early in the formal study of elementary statistics to describe many distributions. The same techniques are used later to assess the credibility of the normality conditions that underpin inference with means, as well as the normality and homogeneity assumptions about errors in linear regression.
