Connect a Fax Modem

If you want to send or receive faxes using your Mac, you must connect an external fax modem. Faxing has long been superseded by email as the preferred way of sending documents and images. However, faxing still has a place for those times when you need to send a document that shows your signature or contains handwritten annotations.

Some older Macs came with an internal fax modem already installed, so you may not need to connect an external modem. Also note that Apple’s USB Modem is not compatible with OS X Lion or Mountain Lion.
