To make use of the TCP/IP protocol suite, each host and router requires a certain amount of configuration information. Configuration information is used to assign local names to systems, and identifiers (such as IP addresses) to interfaces. It is also used to either provide or make use of various network services, such as the Domain Name System (DNS) and Mobile IP home agents.
