Even More TCP/IP Applications and Services

In this part . . .

The chapters in Part IV delve into more applications, services, and protocols related to mobile IP, voice, and sharing files, printers, and CPU cycles.

Few people who use a computer go anywhere without a mobile device or two (or more), whether it’s a big laptop, a tiny netbook, a smartphone, a PDA, or another device. The Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) has worked to make special versions of IP, Mobile IP v4 and v6, to enable mobile devices to work across the Internet. Chapter 16 addresses mobile networking concerns in general and Mobile IP in particular.

To recognize that everyone wants to save money, Chapter 17 presents the Voice over IP (VoIP) set of protocols as a way to save on telephone bills or do away with telephone bills (and telephones) altogether. You also find plenty of security tips in Chapter 17 so that you can protect the privacy of your computer calls.

The rest of Part IV talks about sharing: sharing file and print services (Chapter 18) and compute services (Chapter 19). These last two chapters expand on the general client/server concepts we present in Chapter 3 by relating those concepts to specialized file, print, and computing clients and servers.
