ARPA The Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA) of the United States Department of Defense sponsored critical research projects. ARPA sponsored the original Internet as a means of facilitating collaborative research among its supporting organizations.

ARPAnet The original Internet deployed by ARPA was known as the ARPAnet.

base address A base address is the first IP address in either a network address or a subnetwork address block. The base address typically serves as the address for that network or subnetwork.
