Chapter 8. Can Bosses Change Their (Blind) Spots?

Whenever people hear that I coach abrasive bosses, I'm asked the same question over and over again: Can leopards change their spots? They're not really asking about leopards—they're challenging the possibility that abrasive bosses can become adequate bosses. Can abrasive bosses change their blind spots? Can they ever see that they harm others, and change their behavior? From my conversations with the people who manage them, I've learned that the leopard question reflects a deeply held belief that abrasive bosses are a hopeless lot. I've also learned that this belief is reinforced by management's well-meaning but failed attempts to intervene with abrasive bosses.
