Conclusion

Remember, this is all about being professional and creative. Doing battle with a tireless TOT never works. You'll have much better results by understanding what makes managers behave like toddlers and taking a collaborative approach to resolving problems.

Of course, not every TOT is open to change, so you must also set limits. If you are in a bad or hopeless situation with your boss, it's time to regain control and move on. You can always be a TOT tamer in your next job, and if you end up with a terrific boss, that's even better.

You can make a difference at work, and you can enact change. "Managing up" will help preserve your sanity, ease the tension, and perhaps your workload. It will also make you look like a superstar in the eyes of your TOT (and maybe even Big TOT and Super TOT)—placing your career destiny back in your hands.

If your boss behaves like a Terrible Office Tyrant, by exhibiting Bratty Behavior or acting like a Little Lost Lamb, just remember: you can—and will—tame that TOT!
