Chapter FourSpeak Up Confidently
A young Canadian female engineer was participating in a company-wide training exercise on “Nuclear Safety Culture for Managers.” Toward the end, each table of attendees was asked to share their findings with the entire room. The young woman's tablemates nominated her to present their observations. She stood up and spoke eloquently about the importance of safety standards for nuclear reactors. What was even more exciting was that (in her words), “Right in the middle of presenting, I suddenly realized that I was talking about nuclear safety to the chief engineer and I was comfortable holding my ground. This was the ‘aha’ moment that showed me I had taken the stage.”
