Access iPhone Files from Your Mac

Several Mac utilities allow you to access, within limits, files on the iPhone. In general, you are confined to the sandbox of the Media area where your content—such as music, video, and contacts—is stored, but some utilities—including MobileSyncBrowser—access the iPhone's backup file, which means you can view backed up data, such as notes and text messages, without having the iPhone connected to the Mac.

Two utilities that help you work with the Media area are PhoneView and DiskAid. They both require that the iPhone be connected to the Mac. I cover each in turn, next.
