Chapter . Install and Use VMware Fusion

The second virtualization package for Intel Macs, VMware Fusion, is neck-and-neck with Parallels Desktop in overall capabilities. Although it’s better in some ways and not quite so good in other ways, it’s shaping up to be serious competition. (Read more about it in VMware Fusion.)

In version 1.1, the latest release at publication time, some of the standout features are these:

  • Experimental support for DirectX 9.0 3D graphics acceleration

  • SMP (symmetric multiprocessing) support in virtual machines, meaning applications that rely on multiple processors or cores will run faster

  • Support for the 64-bit version of Windows Vista when running on a Mac with a 64-bit processor

  • Wide support for USB 2.0 devices
