Chapter 2. Decide on a Basic Backup Strategy
For years, I've preached that you shouldn't make decisions about backing up your computer based on the hardware or software you already own, but rather, develop a strategy based on your needs, and then choose hardware and software that fits your strategy.
I still believe that, but Time Machine changes the equation a bit. Since most Mac users now already have this capable and easy-to-use backup program, that's a natural starting point—which is fine. Even if it's a foregone conclusion that you'll use Time Machine, though, I suggest thinking through every aspect of your backup needs before purchasing hardware or settling on an overall backup strategy.
