Starting with ConfigMgr 2012 SP 1, Microsoft supports directly using the install.wim image file from Windows source media and this now works correctly within a ConfigMgr task sequence. Previously, direct use of this image file installed Windows to the logical D: drive (rarely desired). This was often a technical challenge because administrators and applications normally assume the C: drive is used. To account for this when directly using the image.wim file, you must properly set the OSDPreserveDriveLetter task sequence variable as discussed later in this section.
