SQL Server Reporting Services Overview

SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS) is part of SQL Server and was first released with SQL Server 2000. Technically, it is best understood as a Windows application because SSRS uses an application layer and stores its information in SQL Server databases running on Windows Server.

Microsoft first introduced SSRS integration for Configuration Manager with ConfigMgr 2007 Release 2 (R2) as a reporting option to augment the product’s legacy (Active Server Pages [ASP]) reports. With the 2012 version of ConfigMgr, SSRS is now the only supported reporting solution because Microsoft has deprecated the legacy reporting feature.
