Beyond the Built-In Update Process

Although the built-in software update process is robust and flexible, it may not fit into every organization’s update methodology or meet the specific or exact requirements for software update timing or procedures. To this end, there are two specific options to help fill the gap:

Task sequences: These are built into ConfigMgr itself. Described in Chapter 19, “Operating System Deployment,” task sequences enable a set of ordered tasks to be executed on a system. Using a custom task sequence and the built-in Install Software Update task, you can coordinate the deployment of software updates with other tasks on a single system such as reboots, software deployments, or other custom actions including scripts.
