Introducing new versions of software for existing users prompts the question, “In-place upgrade, or side-by-side installation?” The answer is usually, It depends. There are clear advantages and documented challenges to each.

The authors’ experience with both approaches shows that when you have a choice between the two, side-by-side migration drives the implementation to use more of the new capabilities of the new version. More important, migration reduces the risk of potentially preserving undocumented and unsupported legacy configurations.
