Site System Communications Using HTTP and HTTPS

HTTP and HTTPS are among the protocols used for communication between various site systems, including the site server and the software update point. At the highest-level site in your hierarchy configured with a software update point, the SUP connects to the Internet over HTTP if you configure it to retrieve updates from directly from Microsoft. If the server cannot connect to the Internet directly, you can specify a proxy server for the Internet connection. If Internet connectivity is not available for the SUP or if you choose not to have this system synchronize directly from the Internet, you can manually stage updates by importing them from a .cab file.
