In ConfigMgr 2007, sites carried out all data exchanges through file transfers. ConfigMgr 2012 still uses file transfers for some types of data, including

• Deployment content for software distribution.

• Client discovery data records (DDRs) are sent to the client’s assigned site if a different site receives them from the client.

• Client status messages received by the fallback status point and sent to the client’s assigned site.

• Data sent from a secondary site to its parent primary site.

Sites exchange file data by means of senders. Senders use the SMB protocol to transfer files between sites. Here are the sender settings you can configure for each site:
