I wish to thank all the people who have helped me throughout the long years that I needed to complete the manuscript.

First, all members of the Italian Study Group on Synchronization, established by Telecom Italia and joined by Sirti, Fondazione Ugo Bordoni and CSELT (now Telecom Italia Lab), with whom I began to work with in the early 1990s.
