Travis Snyder stood on a Paris sidewalk in April 2014 and took it all in.

Eight years earlier, he and his wife had scraped together enough money to come to the City of Lights for the first time and do the American tourist-on-a-tight-budget tour. During that visit he thought what it would be like to stage an event here, in the shadow of the Eiffel Tower. “I remember seeing a Susan G. Komen poster in the subway,” he says. “And I thought, ‘What would that be like to have an event come over here?’ Seemed like a crazy dream.”
