11.1 Introduction

At its most basic level, the goal of optimization is to find a set of inputs which minimizes or maximizes a function. It tends to be the convention that if functions are minimized, a maximization problem can always be formed in terms of a minimization. The function to be minimized is known as the objective function and the space on which its inputs exist is called the solution space.
