WHAT ANIMAL AM I?

If you are willing to listen, nature has much to share.

The many solitary hours I spent on the Serengeti plains of East Africa gave me the chance to observe how nature maintains its unique balance. It can seem ruthless at times, and we ' re often unable to comprehend it. I will be the first to acknowledge that I do not understand it all, either. Yet I have come to appreciate the value of the lessons we can learn by looking more closely than we normally do. It is through my experiences that I am able to explain these seven skills—an explanation that will hopefully contribute to your personal journey.

First, let me share some basic principles:

  • There are herbivores, carnivores, and omnivores. Herbivores eat grass and other plants, carnivores eat herbivores and other meat, and omnivores eat almost anything.

  • Collectively and individually, animals live according to a very strict code that includes many predetermined realities of life. Each accepts the others for who they are and the role they play in the world around them.

  • Each species struggles not only with its own need to survive, but also its natural instinct to reproduce and thrive—the very essence of the circle of life.
