CHAPTER 20Assertive Techniques That Give You Power

Here are the steps of assertiveness when you are taking the risk of confronting another person in the workplace, be it a co-worker or a supervisor:

1. State the problem. Use the Sandwich Technique. Start with a positive compliment about the person, then go directly into the problem, giving feedback clearly and with specific examples, and end on a positive note.

2. State your feelings. Say how the person’s behavior makes you feel and why. Be specific.

3. Offer solutions. Give the person you are confronting various options for rectifying his or her behavior and let the person know how much better your working arrangement will be when his or her behavior changes.
