CHAPTER 12Four Different Intentions of CommunicationWin/Win, Win/Lose, Lose/Win, and Lose/Lose

The intentions of interpersonal communications are crucial to their outcome. Be aware of your conscious and unconscious intent. The intentions can be simplistically divided into four types of situations:

• win/win

• win/lose

• lose/win

• lose/lose

Try to identify your own intentions when you talk to someone. Read the following example descriptions of the kinds of intention conveyed by each type of communication and see which one fits you:
