As discussed earlier, you have three basic sources of power to draw upon to establish your reputation as a leader:

  1. You have power that comes from your role as a supervisor. Anyone in your job as a manager has the same power. It gives you authority to require certain behavior from your workers. You must be careful, however, not to overuse this source.

  2. You have power because of your knowledge. Your followers respect you because they recognize you have skills and know-how. This source of power is seldom overworked.
