THE PART-TIMER

Federal legislation defines a part-timer as an employee who works less than 1,000 hours per year (17 1/2 hours per week). Organizations generally view a part-timer as an individual who works twenty-nine hours per week or less. The average is about twenty.

Part-time jobs normally have these characteristics:

  • Wages are typically lower.

  • Only the basic or required benefits are provided.

  • Some organizations use part-timers as a pool from which to select full-timers.

  • Part-time jobs usually offer less job security.

  • Part-timers give many types of organizations flexibility and lower labor costs.
