CASE: CHOICE

Both Mrs. R and Mr. G should make good supervisors. The author favors Mr. G because his greater sensitivity to the needs of the employees could lead to greater productivity. Mrs. R has a more Theory X oriented style (authoritative rather than permissive), and because she has neglected to build strong relationships with co-workers, they may resent her being promoted over them. Resentment plus a heavy-handed attitude could make productivity increases difficult. Mr. G's sensitivity (and the fact that he has built better relationships with co-workers) makes him more acceptable to the employees, which could be converted into higher productivity.
