Single System Image for Standard Applications

A fundamental attribute of cluster technology is to provide a framework that gives programmers the tools necessary for the creation of applications to provide a single system image (SSI). The SSI environment offers scalability, HA, global data storage, and enhanced management capability. For additional information on SSIs, see Chapter 2, “Sun Cluster 2.2 Architecture.”

A cluster that provides an SSI must provide a mechanism to ensure data integrity by means of locking semantics robust enough to handle a wide range of failure and recovery scenarios without impacting system performance.
