High Availability for Business

High availability (HA) means different things to different people. For a database system, high availability can be viewed from two different perspectives: business and technical. We have already discussed the attributes of HA from a technical perspective; however, from a business perspective, database HA can be viewed as a strategy to minimize loss of revenue.

The purpose of HA is to reduce lost revenue due to system failures; however, any resulting loss of revenue from a system outage must be higher than the associated costs of hardware and software required to implement high availability.
