If you want to know how TCP really works (I tried to keep it simple), I recommend TCP/IP Illustrated Volume I - The Protocols by W. Richard Stevens, Addison Wesley, 1994. Appendix E of that book covers the meaning of the ndd options for Solaris 2.2. An updated Appendix E to cover Solaris 2.5.1 is available from Stevens’ web site: http://www.kohala.com/~rstevens/tcpipiv1.html.

As with any set of tuning parameters, you can easily mess up your system if you get carried away. Please take care: don’t tweak production systems unless you are certain you have a problem, and make sure you have studied TCP/IP Illustrated really carefully.
