Sumantra’s passing is one of personal sadness for me, not only or even especially because he was such a thoughtful, and profound scholar. He was a great human being and a cherished friend. I never knew anyone quite like him – no-one who could challenge so directly, so energetically, so playfully. We all have a certain human energy inside of us, but no-one more than Sumantra.

I was asked here to comment on work we did together. I can’t do that. Working with Sumantra was never work! It was pleasure. And doing other things with Sumantra was always work: he was so full of ideas about everything that I never stopped learning in his presence.
