“What Is Our Company DNA?”

By DNA, I mean the overall character of your company, in the sense that one talks about an individual’s character. Certainly, this is defined by your corporate values and the company dream we have just spoken of. Beware, though. The company DNA cannot be read off a nicely worded mission statement hanging in your reception area. It is most vividly expressed by what actually happens, day by day, inside the four walls of your company.

People often speak in this respect of “corporate culture,” but that phrase is too restrictive. It suggests dress codes or the time employees clock in. These are actually significant indicators, but what constitutes your company DNA goes far wider and deeper (see Figure 1-1).
