DETERMINING THE MISSING PIECE OF THE BUSINESS PUZZLE

My clients have often found it useful to consider the business picture as a puzzle in which some pieces are firmly in place while others are misshaped, incomplete, or missing. These problem pieces represent strategic needs your company must meet in order to realize your future vision, as shown in Figure 3-1.

For example, if you are currently operating in the Northeast and your business vision calls for you to expand to the Midwest, then the “Location” piece of the puzzle is incomplete. Or if your current product line is computer software and your customers are migrating to mobile devices, then “Technology” becomes a critical piece.
