The degree of integration you engineer will vary according to your strategic purpose. You may want to leave the seller mostly alone, happy to let a successful business continue down its own path with some periodic guidance from above. You could go a step further and combine some of the back office functions for the sake of efficiency, while staying mostly hands-off with the rest of the business. For example, if you are buying a supplier that has served you well in the past, you may integrate HR or accounting but leave the operations side alone.
