As noted earlier, there are three options for open source technical support:

  • Community support

  • Paid support

  • Self-support

It is more difficult to locate open source support resources than it is to do so for commercial products, but there are a number of techniques that can assist the organization in its search. Although the numerous support mechanisms might seem like overkill in comparison with the single-source approach of commercial software vendors, the availability of multiple mechanisms can actually be a strength of open source. Relying on a single provider exposes an IT organization to significant risk.
