In Western Australia, teachers are required to mark students against Curriculum Council prescribed benchmarks and create a school average. At the end of the year, students’ external examination scores are compared to their internal ones. The internal scores are then adjusted, either increased or decreased, to match the bell curve of the school’s external average. This adjustment process is to make sure teachers mark their students fairly compared with all the other students in the state.
