This chapter is an introduction to the various aspects of structural engineering. It starts with a discussion of structural systems, structural member, and components and highlights the significance of cross-sectional analysis and design. It continues to discuss the basic concepts and procedures for structural analysis and design, including a discussion of the development of structural design philosophy and progression of design approaches, terminating with a discussion of performance-based design.
