SOLVED PROBLEM 11.19

Find the Euler’s critical load for a hollow cylindrical cast iron column 150 mm external diameter, 20 mm wall thickness if it is 6 m long with hinges at both ends. Assume Young’s modulus of cast iron as 80 kN/mm2. Compare this load with given by Rankine’s formula using Rankine’s constant a = 1/1,600 and fc = 567 N/mm2 (Anna Univ., May 2006, EEE).

Solution:

Given data: External diameter = 150 mm, thickness = 20 mm, length = 6 m, E = 80 kN/mm2, a = 1/1,600 and fc = 567 N/mm2.
