Chapter 16. Managing the Dictionary

The purpose, form, and symbols of the dictionary were described first in Chapter 8, and illustrations of dictionary listings were given in Figures 8.4 and 8.5. As mentioned there, it would be unthinkable these days to implement the dictionary in anything other than a computerized data base, either separately or as part of a comprehensive automated tool. This book is not the place to discuss data base management in detail—there are many excellent texts on the subject, such as references [3,8]. What we will do here is define the fields the data base should contain, and some of the useful reports it should produce.
