Before we explore each specific XML-related technology in detail, you'll find it useful to have a high-level overview of where these technologies come from. Figure 3.1 depicts several of the most widely used XML technologies, their interrelationships, and their current status.

The rest of this chapter gives brief descriptions of the standards and applications shown in Figure 3.1. For convenience and ease of understanding, these topics have been organized into three broad categories: core standards, standard applications, and general applications.
