Case Study: Combining Approaches

As discussed earlier, it is often necessary to combine various approaches for defining demand in order to determine the staffing requirements in a given situation. Here is a simple example that combines several of the approaches for calculating demand that were just described.

A restaurant chain was analyzing its needs for management staffing. Each restaurant requires general managers, assistant managers, and management trainees. Because restaurant capacity and design are standardized, a management staffing profile can be created. Here are some critical assumptions:

  • The restaurant is open for business from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Friday, 11 a.m. to 12 a.m. Saturday, and 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday.
