There Is No “Magic Bullet”

Wouldn’t it be great to find an easy, objective way to define required staffing levels? Many organizations think that there must be a “magic bullet” out there somewhere. Isn’t there a software package I can buy that will tell me what my staffing requirements will be? Isn’t there a model I can build or buy that I can just plug some numbers into and obtain staffing level forecasts?

There is not, and there never will be, such a magic bullet. The definition of required staffing levels will be difficult, but the rewards for doing this well will be many. There is a possible corollary to this: Any vendor that tells you that it has such a model or package simply does not understand the realities or nuances of your business. ...
