TOR-MENTORS: WHEN RELATIONSHIPS ARE PROBLEMATIC

Mentoring relationships may become problematic for benign reasons or for more alarming reasons, just like any other relationship. Often, a mentee will outgrow the close guidance of a mentor and want to move in a direction that the mentor does not support. While this may look like dysfunction, it can be reframed as “it’s time to move on!”

Problems may occur early if the mentor and mentee have conflicting goals or important value differences that make it very difficult to find common ground and a shared purpose for the relationship.
