WHY RELATIONSHIPS MATTER

“No man is an island,” wrote English poet John Donne in 1624. But in our workplace lives, we sometimes act like one.

Lauren is two years into her first job as a financial analyst after graduating from college. She really likes the work and wants to build her career in this organization. At the same time, she doesn’t have a real sense that her work is valued. She wonders if she is doing what’s expected of her. So far, her performance appraisals have been generally good but perfunctory.
