The origins of this book were the worksheets Jude created for a training at the National Minority AIDS Coalition in the early 1990s. Although the ideas and presentation of the strategic planning process have been put to paper by the two of us, we gratefully acknowledge our debt to the many other consultants, writers, and friends who have kept us sane and contributed to our learning and to the field of planning over the past many years.

We think of all of our colleagues through the many years we both worked at CompassPoint as contributors to this book. We especially thank Jan Masaoka, long-time executive director for her creativity and innovative thinking about nonprofit management.
