WHAT WE LEARNED

  • Measures must follow the goals. We found we needed three sets of measures: results, embedment, and individual measures. Mixing results with embedment is confusing and minimizes the importance of both. This was a lot of work, but worthwhile in terms of accurate status and credibility of innovation embedment.
  • Measures must be set, tracked, and then reported. Data collection and tracking cannot require inordinate amounts of time and energy. This will defeat the purpose.
  • Where possible, add innovation embedment to existing measurement systems. This will cause less confusion and fewer new concepts to learn in the first years of innovation embedment.
